ABOUT
The Hastings and district geological society, is a friendly group of those interested in any and all aspects of geology. Everyone in the society comes from different backgrounds and different knowledge to bring to the group. Everyone, no matter what your connection with geology, is welcome in the society. We meet once a month, where we engage in fascinating talks by experts or enthusiasts, or field trips where our members can see geology themselves in the world.
Society activities
No matter what your interests, our activities will either pique your interest or help you discover and learn about topics you have never thought about or areas you are unfamiliar with. Due to our members varied backgrounds everyone.
For the Talks and the members parties we meet at the Hastings museum at 2 PM, however members usually arrive before this time.
Talks
Once a month through out the year we will have a talk in the Durbar Hall in the Hastings museum and art gallery. These talks feature a wide range of topics and interests, the talks are lead by either expert visitors or experts from within the group. Our talks have featured all maner of topics from aspects of geology, natural sciences, great explorers or geologists of the past and many interesting topics. These talks are always fascinating to watch no matter what your interest and you will always come out of the talk with a new understanding and appreciation for the topic of the talk. Following the talk there will be a chance to ask the expert questions about the topic, then a chance to get tea and coffee, while having a chance to mingle and interact with other members.
Field trips
Every year we organised several field trips to interesting and varied places. some field trips are to fossil hunting spots or seeing the geology in the real world for the more active members. We also go on field trips to various places of interest such as museums or historic sites with a geological past. These field trips are great fun and we aim to make a mix of trips to cater for a variety of interests and mobility types.
Members parties
Every year we have three members parties, which are a great chance to chat with the other members and a chance to share geological finds and experiences of the year with other members. Our parties begin with the New years lunch, then a Members day and summer party midway through the year, then finally a Christmas party at the end of the year. During these parties we have displays made by members showing fossils, minerals or other items of interest. We also have a raffle and party food, with a chance to interact with the other members.
